10th Specialezed Conference on Small Water and Wastewater Treatment System (SWWS)
4th Specialized Conference on Decentralized Water and Wastewater International Network (DEWSIN)
3th Specialized Conference on Resources Oriented Sanitation (EcoSan)
Hosted and co-organized by
Magistrato alle Acque di Venezia (MAV) - Venice Water Authority
In collaboration with School of Chemical Engineering of the Wastewater Treatment and Renewable Resources
In Italy more than 9000 municipal wastewater treatment plants have capacity for less than 2000 population equivalent and, in certain locations, the small and decentralized systems are definitely required. This is the case of the historic city of Venice where the municipal wastewaters are treated by 140 small biological plants and more than 7000 septic tanks. Venice is therefore a unique venue to bring together researchers, professionals and policy-makers in this field and to outline the actual state-of-the-art and the future perspectives of small water and wastewater systems in a place where these topics are successfully applied. Additionally, Venice has held an important role throughout history and is recognized across the Mediterranean for its expertise in management and treatment of water. Therefore, the joint conference will play an important function in the definition of the Mediterranean and International strategies regarding water policy, giving evidence of the potentialities coming from small and decentralized systems in developed and developing countries. Furthermore, the small and decentralized systems are demonstrating a leading role in the treatment of strong nitrogenous wastewater, especially where farms and agro-industries are small and spread across sensitive areas.
Finally, the SSS 4 WATER event will give adequate scientific and technological support for the definition of decentralization as a sustainable strategy to treat wastewater where, in many cases, centralized systems do not fit with technological and economical requirements.
Event Format
The main theme of the event is small and decentralized water and wastewater systems, including reuse and resources oriented sanitation. The event will be run into: General Sessions (18 and 21 ist afternoon and 22 nd morning). The event isopen to all with an interest in small and decentralized wastewater treatment systems and reuse.
